Γυμναστήριο + Τεχνολογία = Love?

Ένα από τα πράγματα που υποσχέθηκα στον εαυτό μου ότι θα έκανα, είναι να ξαναρχίσω το γυμναστήριο. Αυτή τη φορά όμως ήθελα να το κάνω τρόπο ζωής και όχι έχοντας σώνει και καλά συγκεκριμένους μεσοπρόθεσμους στόχους βγαλμένους από το Men's Fitness (πχ να κάνω κοιλιακούς ή ποντίκια).

Ενώ είχα ξεκινήσει κι άλλες φορές στο εν λόγω γυμναστήριο, βρέθηκα προ εκπλήξεως. Παρόλο που το γυμναστήριο είναι σχετικά καινούργιο (2005 απ'όσο θυμάμαι) βλέπω να έχουν μπει νέοι διάδρομοι. Αλλά τι διάδρομοι...Μετά από γκουγκλάρισμα, βρήκα ότι ήταν καλής Αμερικάνικης ράτσας. Και τα συγκεκριμένα μοντέλα δεν ήταν τίποτα φτηνιάρικο. Άνηκαν στην κατηγορία Elite που πάντα σημαίνει ότι είναι η πιο high-end κλίμακα. Οι εν λόγω διάδρομοι όχι μόνο έχουν πιο μεγάλο μήκος από το κανονικό, για εμάς τους ψηλούς, αλλά και ενσωματωμένη θύρα για iPod και οθόνη 7'' για αναλογική και ψηφιακή τηλεόραση! Στην αρχή νόμιζα πως ήταν touch screen η οθόνη αλλά γρήγορα έφαγα την ψηφιακή χυλόπιτά μου (πολλά θέλω). Αλλά όλες οι υπόλοιπες ανέσεις δε με χαλάνε καθόλου.

Τώρα έχω άλλον ένα λόγο να πηγαίνω με έναν άλφα (και βήτα) κίνητρο παραπάνω στο γυμναστήριο - πέρα του γεγονότος ότι είναι 130 ολόκληρα κοπιαστικά βήματα μακριά μου (ναι τα μέτρησα). "Now get your ass there and move that butt!" (φωνάζει η χοντρή γυμνάστρια μέσα μου).

Wikipedia and Us

Today I made my own humble donation to Wikimedia, the organization behind Wikipedia. I felt like donating because Wikipedia is one of the most helpful and resource-filled websites of the internet right now. I can't imagine a more straightforward website where I can find information on...virtually anything. Things like the latest release info on any music album or the origins of Phrenology or finding about what the heck Occam's razor is.

I strongly urge everyone to contribute as much as they can to Wikipedia. Free knowledge is partly what the internet as a medium is all about. And knowledge makes us smarter if not better human beings. Insert your own cliche here about knowledge. Mine would be "knowledge of history helps us from making the same mistakes". Oh and Happy Holidays too.

15χρονοι και ειρηνικές πορείες

Αυτό το post δεν έχει να κάνει με παιχνίδια, άλλωστε δεν απέκλεισα ποτέ την περίπτωση να γράψω για κάτι άσχετο με το gaming.

Θα ήθελα να μιλήσω για το συναισθηματικό ξέσπασμα των νέων που εκφράζεται με τις πορείες που γίνονται αυτό τον καιρό για τους ήδη γνωστούς λόγους. Τα παιδιά εννοείται πως έχουν κάθε δικαίωμα να το κάνουν, και χαίρομαι που το 98-99% δεν αποτελεί την αναρχικο/καταστρεπτική υποομάδα βανδάλων που βλέπουμε στα κανάλια.

Θα ήθελα όμως να κάνω έκκληση σε έναν αριθμό παιδιών που παίρνουν μέρος στις πορείες αυτές. Υπάρχουν κάποια παιδιά που γουστάρουν τσαμπουκά και προκαλούν τους αστυνομικούς. Είναι τα παιδιά με τα καδρόνια στο χέρι που φωνάζουν κάπως πιο δυνατά από τα άλλα και έχουν μία παραπάνω ζωηράδα στα μάτια τους. Μήπως θα έπρεπε αυτοί που εισακούγονται πιο πολύ από τους άλλους να αναφερθούν σ'αυτό; Από τη στιγμή που μία πορεία είναι ειρηνική, οτιδήποτε εκτός από τηλεβόα και πανό δεν έχει θέση στα χέρια των διαμαρτυρούμενων. Για να απενεχοποιηθούν εντελώς όλοι οι νέοι που βγαίνουν στους δρόμους, θα πρέπει να αποτρέψουν αυτά τα λίγα παιδιά από το να δίνουν το όποιο δικαίωμα σε δημοσιογράφο ή πολιτικό να υποννοήσει ότι οι νέοι συμφωνούν με όσα έγιναν αυτές τις μέρες στο κέντρο της Αθήνας.

I have been waiting for Konami to release their 15th release of their continuing series of Beatmania games into PS2 over a year now. The upcoming "DJ-simulation" release this time is called "Beatmania IIDX DJ Troopers". The theme this time around is about everything military, hence the post title. Βemani fans are expecting more than 90 songs to be bundled inside, including many artist collaboration songs and a few surprise remixes of popular oldies.

The mix of genres now tends to look into being more techno hardcore and gabba-ish sort of sounds. Players will still have a selection of J-Pop songs but not in the number that Happy Sky or Gold offered. Although this may dissappoint some players, I personally feel good about it.

Since this is beatmania, there is no lack of obscure or even goofy sounding songs as well. Take Do It!!! for example. As the name suggests, it's about a track full of samples that encourage you to... "Do it!" and has a very minimalistic approach in doing it (pun intended).

Equally interesting (if not a bit obscure again) is the transformation of the Extra Stage mechanism of standard (arcade) mode into a series of "Boss" songs encounters. This sounds like the Cardinal Gate system used in IIDX DistorteD but this time it becomes even more literal. The videos used in each of the so-called Military Splash songs are of actual boss type characters (scorpion, humanoid, eagle etc) that move around the video screen, prompting you to shoot at them. Shoot you say? Yes, the player actually shoots the bosses by making the correct button presses. This makes for a refreshingly original experience that may only wear out quickly for hardcore players who focus on playing only the most challenging songs (and all military splash songs are very challenging).

That said, I'm really looking forward to this release, because there is a number of songs I've really fallen in love with and accompany me in my trips round the Athens metro. Those are Anisakis, Sat Final, 2 Tribe 4 K, Avant Guerre, Time to Air, Icarus and more.

I bit the apple

Yes. I bit it. I now am a proud owner of a Mac Book Pro. Say anything you want or maybe "take anything you want". Yes, Macs cost more than regular laptops, and yes, they have this weird dock in the desktop and no .exe files. They also don't have viruses or major problems in functioning, and that's what I was most interested about. So far I didn't have any hints of hardware problems, yet I'm a bit worried about the future. See, even though I have a 3 year extended Apple Care support, Greece honors only the first year. Lack of an official Apple service provider can easily make this happen. Rainbow, the official Greek Apple importer, implies that we should be thanking them for even honoring the first year. Come on Apple, say that you're going to build an Apple store and we'll do anything! We'll even buy an iPhone (if Cosmote makes it as the official importer).

Κακός ύπνος = κακό ξύπνημα

Χτες δεν ξύπνησα καλά. Ένιωθα ότι κάτι δεν πήγαινε σωστά. Σίγουρα αυτό το κάτι ήταν η έλλειψη ύπνου αφού πρέπει να τον είχα πάρει για 3 ώρες το πολύ. Μπορεί να ήταν Σάββατο, αλλά είχα και να πάω να βοηθήσω τη μητέρα μου σε ένα σεμινάριο. Το τεχνικό κομμάτι. Όχι τίποτα το φοβερό, απλά να μην πάει τίποτα στραβά με τους προτζέκτορες και τις ομιλίες. Δεν είχα και πολλή διάθεση αλλά ήμουν αισιόδοξος ότι θα μου έρχονταν σιγά σιγά. Ένιωσα καλύτερα όταν είχα άνθρωπο να δείξω πώς παίζεται το Unou no Tatsujin: Soukai! Machigai στο DS.

Όταν έφτασα στον προορισμό, άργησα να συνειδητοποιήσω ότι ο ένας μου φακός ήταν ανάποδα. Κατάφερα όμως να το ελέγξω έτσι ώστε να μη με πολυενοχλεί. Όταν πια έφτασε η ώρα να φύγω, το μόνο που είχα στο νου μου ήταν να ξαπλώσω παίζοντας DS. Και αυτό έκανα. Δεν ήθελα να με πάρει ο ύπνος άλλα ο οργανισμός μου δεν μπορούσε να μην υποκύψει.

Να μην τα πολυλογώ, την υπόλοιπη μέρα συνέχισα να είμαι αδιάθετος με το πιο εκνευριστικό πράγμα την αδυναμία να καταπιώ χωρίς να νιώθω ενόχληση. Ας βρει κανένας ιατρός μια χημική ένωση να βάλουν στις Amita Motion να ησυχάσουμε.

Nintendo Wii and stuff

Last Wednesday I had the joy of being at the Athens Hilton for the official presentation of Wii in Greece. As I expected, lots of people were there, although I hadn't seen any type of mass media covering it beforehand.

I had a blast with Metroid and lots of fun with Wario despite the limited number of mini games available. I satisfyingly managed to finish the entire Metroid demo, which wasn't too short, and I didn't feel too sad for not having the opportunity to play Zelda: Twilight Princess. I had been watching far too many visitors play the exact same demo to not be able to imagine how it would feel had I actually tried it. Pictures coming soon.

Update: Last night I went to my neighbourhood's Γερμανός (Germanos), to see if they would have any Wii consoles available for purchase on the launch date (December 8 for Europe beside Spain). Turns out nobody knew anything about this previously "unheard of" console except something about "a PS3 that we know is coming out in March". Crazy people.

Since Nintendo Greece has sold out its own Wii supply, I decided I'll be receiving a free Wii by winning their website's lottery. No I'm not crazily optimistic, just often lucky. I'm chanting as we speak!

Hi to me! Hi to people! As this is my first post in this blog, it should at least be in any language e-x-c-e-p-t for Greek. That way, there are more chances I'll be understood by more than just a handful of Greeks. Um, this is a test first post, so I won't say anything too interesting.
